The ancient holiday of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is alive in the 21^st century, and is told here in photographs of people, celebrations and displays.  Juliane Backmann, a German-born photographic artist, traveled to Oaxaca , Mexico , where the holiday was initiated by the ancients, and to Los Angeles , California , where the event is undergoing a renaissance in the modern world.  Witness how the spirits of departed loved ones are commemorated in both large public events and in private celebrations in the two cultures.
